Why did you start playing D and D?
I’m an only child who never had anyone to play board games with. I found this awesome group of people who invited me to play with them, and I was lucky enough to be included when they decided to start a D&D campaign!
What do you like about playing?
Playing D&D has been really good for me. It plays into my love of strategy but also pushes me out of my comfort zone. I like getting to overcome really difficult things. Life can be hard and it’s a good reminder that a little creativity goes a long way.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. I always wanted to move to a bigger city with more excitement and opportunities. Growing up, I didn’t know any real gamers or nerds, but I think I would have been one if I had had the opportunity! I remember watching Legend of the Seeker and Xena (and even Space Cases, where Jewel Staite from Firefly got her start!) and not having anyone to share them with. I have fully embraced this side of my personality and cosplay at cons, indulge in geeky tv, and play awesome games whenever I can!
Tell me about your career / day job / etc.
*Deer in the headlights look* Still trying to figure that one out! I’ve been helping out on set and with production for Daisy Light and am considering applying for the Director’s Guild Internship. There are so many cool opportunities! I’m still figuring out which direction to go!
Why did you choose to do Shield Maidens?
When an opportunity to hang out with awesome people and play a super cool game comes along, you don’t say no!
Is Shield Maidens important to you?
It is very important to me. There are a lot of unknowns as I figure out my career, and it’s a huge comfort to have this weekly treat. Things don’t always go as planned in game, but it’s nice to deal with different problems for a while knowing there’s 6 other kick ass women who have your back.
Tell us about Szymerra.
Szymerra is a tiefling paladin, following the Oath of the Ancients. She pretty much has a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other! She was raised in a sheltered environment, not realizing she was feared and loathed by most of society. She rebelled as young folk are wont to do, which led to opportunistic, tragic loss at the hands of the closed minded. In her grief, she gave into rage and anger and partook in her fair share of destruction and crime. In a failed raid, she nearly lost her life but was spared by a local army’s paladin. He took her under his wing and helped her turn things around.
How is Szymerra like you?
Building Szymerra was really cathartic for me. We’ve both been through some tough stuff and have chosen to fight through and be better than our circumstances. I think a lot of people can relate to that struggle. And I think it’s an amazing thing to do. Playing her is an awesome reminder of that. She helps me remember that I am also brave and strong. I also connect to her desire to see the best and focus on the good in the world. That’s why she chose the Oath of the Ancients. She, maybe better than anyone, knows there are bad things in the world, but refuses to let that be the end of the story.
What would you like viewers to take away from Shield Maidens?
Life is best lived with friends you enjoy, companions who have your back, and frequent toasts for good luck!
